Comprehensive Guide on School Attendance Attendance Matters: MVISD FAQ Show Transcript hello my name is Travis hacker District Trinity officer from Medina Valley ISD Welcome to our comprehensive guide on School attendance whether you are a parent a guardian or a student understanding the laws and guidelines surrounding School attendance is crucial today we'll explore FAQs about attendance as well as key state laws about attendance and truancy and how they impact you the state of Texas has several attendance laws this includes the 90% rule compulsory attendance laws and truancy laws what is 90% rule in regards to attendance the 90% rule states that a student must be in attendance for at least 90% of the time of provided instruction in order to receive course credit or final grade the 90% rule applies to students in grades kindergarten through 12th grade all types of absences are considered when determining student attendance in accordance with the 90% rule this includes both excused and unexcused absences so what are the state of Texas truancy laws students who are 12 years of age and older that absent from school without an acceptable excuse for 10 or more days or parts of days within a 6-month period may be referred to truancy Court students 12 years of age and younger that accumulate 10 unused absences within a 6-month period is an offence committed by the parent or guard and it may be filed as a complaint of parents contributing to non-attendance Trinity court and parent complaints are all subject to fines and prosecution what classifies as an excused absence absences that can be excused with documentation RS follows documented Healthcare appointments religious holy days required Court appearances higher education visits that's 2 per year for only Juniors and seniors student Learners drivers license appointment documentation must be provided serious or life-threatening illness these must meet specific state requirements what if my student is absent and parent note or doctors excuses turned into the attendance office only 3 parent notes are allowed per year parent notes must be submitted within 3 days if you consider it excused documented Healthcare appointments but the student did not attend school the same day these absences can still affect the 90% in semester exemptions at the secondary level so what are examples of unexcused absences so parent notes that exceed your third day so for example your fourth day car problems oversleeping family and personal business this does include vacations missing the bus any other undocumented absence so what if I bring my student to school after the official attendance time so attendance is taking each day at 10:05 at Medina Valley ISD ta wants to know if your student was present at that time if your student is not present at the official attendance time your student is absent in tozz eyes essentially they take a picture of attendance at that time whoever's in the picture discounted president and those who are not will be absent if your student was late due to a medical appointment you can locate your school in the district website and use the reporting absence link which allows you to turn in the documentation and the campus attendance clerk can correct the attendance for you in Texas students absence from school for medical appointment is considered excused and does not count towards the students attendance if the student attends school in the same day as the appointment a note from the students healthcare provider is required and should be submitted to the school upon the students return so what are some currency prevention measures that we take here at Medina Valley ISD to prevent truancy MVD will notify parents after students have accumulated 3 or more unexcused absences making them aware of the absence that may lead to truancy in addition to notify the parents of student attendance additional prevention measures may be taken to promote positive attendance this includes parent admin conferences phone calls emails home visits Etc truancy prevention measures are implemented to identify root causes of excessive ISM and provides students the opportunity to complete action plans to improve overall attendance so we look forward to seeing you in class and if you have any questions be sure to contact your campus
